what is the cost?

Windows 10 will be available as a free update for all users with official Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 licenses until July 29, 2016.
Users building their own PCs who don’t have a previous Windows license will have to pay for a fresh copy of Windows 10. Windows 10 Home will cost $119 and Windows 10 Pro will cost $199. It’ll cost $99 to upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro/

Will non-genuine Windows 7 and 8 licenses be eligible, too?

The sad reality is that there are many people with PCs running pirated copies of Windows 7 and 8 and they don’t even know it. It’s a very common situation in Asia. Microsoft vice president of operating systems Terry Myerson previously said in an interview that even PCs with non-genuine Windows 7 and 8 would get the free Windows 10 update. Microsoft has since backpedaled on that claim.

What about my Windows RT device?

We’ve got really bad news: Windows RT isn’t upgradeable to Windows 10. You’re stuck with RT forever.

How to get update?

Microsoft’s anticipating a ton of downloads on July 29, so there’s a queue. To be notified when your free Windows 10 upgrade is available, download and install the Get Windows 10 App to reserve your slot.

Update process time?

According to Microsoft’s official Windows 10 FAQ, the update process will take anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour. In our experience, it usually takes a while when updating operating systems, so plan for the long haul.

There will be seven versions of Windows 10. Most consumers will be getting Windows 10 Home. Smartphone and tablet users will get Windows 10 Mobile (formerly called Windows Phone 8.1). Businesses will get Windows 10 Pro, Windows 10 Enterprise and Windows 10 Mobile. Educational institutions will have access to Windows 10 Education and Windows 10 IoT Core.

If you really can’t wait until the official release date, you can download a beta version of Windows 10 right now. Just sign up for the Windows Insider Program and you’ll get instructions on how to download and install Windows 10 Insider Preview. Be warned, though: It’s beta software, so you may run into bugs and there’s a chance something could go wrong. Always back up your data!

What are the minimum specs my computer needs to run Windows 10?

If your PC can run Windows 8.1, it can run Windows 10. But just in case, here are minimum specs your PC will need for Windows 10:

  • 1GHz processor (or faster)
  • 1GB of RAM (32-bit) and 2GB (64-bit)
  • 16GB of internal free internal storage
  • Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics with WDDM driver
  • Microsoft account and Internet access

For what it’s worth, the Raspberry Pi 2 can run Windows 10 and it’s not powerhouse PC.

Windows 10 for smartphones and tablets is called Windows 10 Mobile and it will be available later this year.

can windows 10 be installed on mac?

Apple hasn’t officially updated Bootcamp with all of the drivers needed to run Windows 10 properly, so some functions may be broken if you’re using Windows 8.1 drivers. The best way to install Windows 10 on your Mac with virtualization software like Parallels or VMware Fusion. And as one geek found out, Windows 10 actually runs better on a Mac than OS X.
That said, Apple will likely update Bootcamp to work with Windows 10 in the future.
