Electric current flow


 In any complete electrical system, there is always a source of energy, which provides the driving force for the movement of Electric current round the system. Just as your heart supplies the pressure that pushed blood round the whole body, so d the source of energy push current round the electrical system. This force may be a battery, a generator or even a socket outlet, which is supplied from the public utilities.
 The driving force, which the energy source provides, is known as electromotive force (e.m.f). As the name goes, this is the force, which sets electrons into motion. This force represents the energy expended during the passing of a unit charge through the source. A complete electrical system therefore has the following components:
  1. The Source
  2. The Load
  3. The control Apparatus
  4. The Channel or Transmission system

Figure1.0 shows a simple arrangement of these components.

More about the components: The source of energy as said earlier could be a battery, a local power generator or a socket outlet powered by the public supply. More will be said about batteries in the next post Cells and accumulators, The load on its own represents any gadgets, equipment,apparatus or products that utilises electricity no matter how simple or complicated they may be. The control represents a means of making or breaking the flow of current through the load. It is commonly called a switch. switches come in different sizes, ratings and arrangements. They range from the simple one-pole switch to the complicated ganged witches and automatic circuit breakers for protection. Switches can also come either as purely mechanically manually operated devices, electromechanical devices or completely automated electronic devices. The channel or transmission system represents materials or media, which allows fee passage of electric current through them. They are commonly known as electrical conductors. On the other hand, there are materials that do not allow electric current to pass through them. These are known as insulators. However there are materials that permit partial passage of electric current through them. These types of materials are known as semi-conductors.
